A PCR reaction looks for traces of genetic material (DNA) and then amplifies those traces by multiplying them.
When your throat is swabbed or blood is taken from you, the PCR test is then used to look for specific parts of the coronavirus sequence in the samples taken from your body.

Anyone can have mild to severe symptoms.
Older adults and people who have severe underlying medical conditions like heart or lung disease or diabetes seem to be at higher risk for developing more serious complications from COVID-19 illness.
People with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19:

Notify the operator that you are seeking care for someone who has or may have COVID-19.
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

Some people without symptoms may be able to spread virus.
The mask is meant to protect other people in case you are infected.
Everyone should wear a mask in public settings and when around people who don’t live in your household, especially when other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.
Masks should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.
Always cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow and do not spit.
Throw used tissues in the trash.
Immediately wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, clean your hands with a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
Clean AND disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.
If surfaces are dirty, clean them. Use detergent or soap and water prior to disinfection.
Then, use a household disinfectant. Most common EPA-registered household disinfectants will work.
Be alert for symptoms. Watch for fever, cough, shortness of breath, or other symptoms of COVID-19.
Especially important if you are running essential errands, going into the office or workplace, and in settings where it may be difficult to keep a physical distance of 6 feet.
Take your temperature if symptoms develop.

COVID-19 testing center
Instructions: Individuals of any age may be tested and do not need to be exhibiting symptoms. Minors under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Call (954) 400-0472 to make an appointment to get tested in SUNRISE.
Test Sites are offered for ages 5+. Patients must bring identification, patients do not have to exhibit symptoms. Testing is no cost to the patient, of insurance status; patients with insurance should bring insurance cards. Patients who are minors must have parent/guardian present in order to be tested.
Rapid testing and antibody testing are not available at these sites; tests are PCR tests and results are received within 2-3 days.
